Sometimes, when I look back over the time I have spent working at trivago, I see how it changed my life and how lucky I have been to get the chance to work among this amazing community, to live and to learn with them. I look back and see a younger version of myself looking desperately for something different and, by just sheer luck, getting it.

It has been a couple of months since Kyle, author of the “You Don’t Know JS” series, visited our trivago headquarters and gave us a wonderful JavaScript workshop. It was such an enjoyable week, being able to meet Kyle in person and walk through his thinking behind the materials. trivago hosts internal workshops and meetups regularly and offers numerous learning opportunities to the employees throughout the year. This time, we decided to do it a little differently.

Ten participants from nine countries, who have never met before, are assigned to teams to work on real-world projects. Can they be successful? We ran this experiment in September 2018 on the trivago Campus, and were blown away by the results.

On 11th of November 2017 trivago hosted a Hackathon at NASDAQ’s MarketSite in New York. The winners were awarded with a trip through Europe to visit trivago’s offices as well as conference tickets for The Next Web, Amsterdam. We invited the winners to our office, where we got to the chance to interview them about their Hackathon experience.

Hackathons! That’s where you feel super excited about creating something interesting, or useful, or just entertaining. They are a great way to encourage creativity and teamwork. Recently, trivago hosted a Python Hackathon in collaboration with the Python Usergroup Düsseldorf. The event was a full success!

Sometimes advertisements just have to be bold. Especially when your goal is to hire creative thinkers, why not give them something to… think about!? That was our goal when we planned a new marketing campaign for Software Engineers.

At the end of August 2017, ten students set foot in the trivago headquarters in Düsseldorf to be part of the first ever trivago Tech Camp. Two weeks were packed with real-world challenges, guest lectures, Q&A sessions, and tons of other opportunities to learn. In the end, a lot of working software was delivered.
